Linen Service Inventory Case Study A major linen service company in the Northeast had abnormal shrinkage in the hospital services division. An inventory plan was needed to capture all linen activity within the supply chain of one of the major hospital systems being serviced.
THE CHALLENGE
Devise a system to count on-hand inventory in 4 large hospitals and the related campus locations using linen product. Establish proper cut-off to capture the soiled processing in the supply chain while identifying areas where on-hand supply may be overstocked or unsecure.
THE APPROACH
HISI special projects management team working with the hospital linen service department identified all standard linen storage locations and all established linen usage locations. In addition all linen collection points were indentified and equipped with locking mechanisms. The linen collection points were emptied and the product tracked as "before inventory". The collection points were locked and the storage and usage locations counted. Soiled linen encountered during the PI was isolated and tagged "before inventory". The storage and usage location inventory data was complied and the linen collection points were unlocked and tagged as "after inventory". HISI teams completed the count of the soiled "before inventory" product after the laundry process at the central laundry facility. The final inventory data for each of the 4 campus locations was compiled and reported.
THE RESULT
An accurate linen inventory result for the hospital system. The PI process developed by the HISI team led to the discovery of locations within each campus which required additional soiled linen collection points and security enhancements.
